Movement & Energy Dashboards
If you are worried about an elderly relative - is it possible to use smart home technology to monitor them and provide reassurance that they are ok?
Using these simple, readily available items I get a daily report for my relative (and non-movement triggered email alarms) that shows movement in the living area, kitchen and garden. It also shows electricity usage - from which I can infer when the kettle, toaster, microwave etc was used, and bed usage (fatigue and daytime sleeping was a worry that needed to be reported to doctors wrt to getting the correct medication). See attached for an example daily report.
Hardware:
- Samsung Smartthings with 2 movement sensors
- Blink with 2 outdoor cameras
- Frient Electricity Meter Interface
- Under Bed sleep monitor
Software (mostly hosted on a single ECS AWS instance at approx 20USD per month):
- Grafana
- InfluxDB
- Node-red
- Gmail
- IFTTT (free account)
- Smartthings influxDB Logger
(and there is a privacy discussion to be had here).
Example of the dashboard:
I sense Samsung is moving away from supporting third party plugins - like the influx logging - so in future I will be investigating using a small nuc running home assistant locally.
Let me know if anyone wants to dig deeper here on how this was setup and configured. There are companies that offer this as a service - but it's quite a high monthly cost.
I am also considering moving the motion sensors to Aqara FP1 Human Presence Sensors - see my other post on this.
